The GbeatKace fob the Championship of England.—On Oct 21, W. Lang of Middlesborough, and J. Brighton, of Norwich, ran 10 miles at the Hackney-wick grounds for the valuable champion cup and £25 a side. The conditions are that the winner should hold the cup for twelve months against all comers, and Mr Baum's liberal prize has frequently changed hands, Lang on a previous occasion winning the trophy from Fleet. Brighton then challenged Lang, and hence the present race. About 1000 persons assembled to witness the run of two such noted pedestrians, and the start was made shortly after 4 o'clock, Lang being the favourite at slight odds, both men coming to the scratch in first-rate condition. Brighton went away with the lead and mantained it to the 16th. lap, when they passed and repassed each other for nearly two more rounds. Brighton then went ahead again and, continued leading to the lap (68,) Lang then rushing ahead, and spurting up the hill in the back stretch, went in a winner by nearly a score yards. The first five miles occupied 27 min. 15 sec. and the whole distance 56 min. 40 sec.
