TRUST LANDS TRUST

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Masterton Trusl|A,ands Trust was held last evening, rS chairman, Mr. J. Macfarlane Laing presiding. There ' were also present: Messrs H. P. Hugo, A. Owen Jones, C. E. Grey, D. Caselberg, EC Ivrahagen. W. H. Jackson and E. Gi Eton. An apology for absence was received from Mr. L. J. Taylor. The Masterton Savage Club advised that it had decided to defer its benefit concert in aid of the Opera House Furnishing Fund until May or June of next year. The Wairarapa Caledonian Society advised that it-had been-definitely decided to hold the Pipe Band Contest at the Memorial Park on Saturday, February 12. If the weather was unfavourable, it was proposed to hold the contest in the Opera House. Mr. Laing reported on the proceedings at a recent meeting of the Contest Committee. The treasurer reported a credit balance of. £876 4s Bd. Accounts totalling £IG7 17s 9d were passed. Tenders were received for the leasing, of the Technical School buildings. The tenders were described as most disappointing, only two coming to hand. The Citizen’s Boy Scout Committee - applied for Ahe use of the woodwork room at a nginal rental. Trustees expressed to assist the Scout movement, btre considered that the building asked for was too valuable to be let at a nominal rental. The chairman was asked to see 'if arrangements could be made to make another building available to the committee, the old Urgent Dispensary building being mentioned as one that could possibly be utilised. An application was received .for the use of the engineering room for con- ■ version into a motor garage and the j building committee was asked to njeet the applicant and discuss the matter with him. ' Mr. Eton conveyed to the chairman, Mr. Laing, on behalf of the Trustees, the best wishes for the festive season. ,v Mr. Krahagen endorsed his remarks! and referred to the happy relations that alwfiys existed between the Trustees and the chairman. Mr. Laing reciprocated the good wishes and invited the Trustees to adjourn to the Midland Hotel for a social evening. The recent fyormance by the Masterton of “The Importance of Being Ernest,” observed Mr J. Macfarlane Laing, was

a most delightful one. It was, he said, an amusing and witty play and it was most regrettable that the attendance of the public was so very small. There was no doubt the Repertory Players had put in a great deal of hard work under Mr. C. C. Marsack, the producer. The poor attendance was most regrettable and discouraging. From the point of View of the Trust it was also unfortunate, as the net proceeds were to be used for the Opera House stage • furnishing fund. They had not yet received the results of the performance but they would be very meagre indeed. Endorsing the chairman’s remarks, Mr. R. Krahagen said the performance was one of the finest of its kind ever put on in Masterton and reflected a great deal of credit on these responsible. Ho considered it might be possible for the play to be presented again at date, when the Trust could possible to assist them. It was too good a show, he said, to let it slip by without the public seeing it in large number^ It was decide®fthat a letter be sent to the Repertory Players, suggesting that the play should be repeated in the winter, when the Trust would do all it could to ensure a good attendance of the public. ___
