JUDGING OF ENTRIES The judging of the entries in the Masterton Group of the Wairarapa Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs’ calf competitions took place at the Solway Showgrounds yesterday morning. Among those present w T ere: Messrs L. Wilton (chaiman), J. Hesse (Supervisor, Education Department), C. C. McLauchlan, McGovern, Percy, S. A. La Roche, Bradley, McGregor, Miller and Mrs Miller (Kopuaranga). Mr. O. Knutson (Dalefield) ay as the judge of the calf classes and Mr. P. C. Brockett judged the records. Following are the results: — Rearing and handling (child’s own care and attention): Harold Cottle (Kopuaranga), 1; Robert Miller (Kopuaranga), 2; George Percy (Fernridge), 3. Merit certificates Avere awarded to Jack Bradley (Te Whiti) and Evelyn McGovern (Sohvay). Dairy type: Shirley Bradley (Te Whiti), 1; Irene Johns (Sohvay), 2; Joyce Percy (Solway), 3. Merit certificates: R. Miller (Kopuaranga), R. Finlay (Opaki), Evelyn McGovern (Solway). The Gladstone Herd Testing Association’s prizes for dairy type, open to calves from tested dams: Irene Johns 1; Evelyn McGovern, 2; Vera McLauclilan (Solway), 3. Merit certificate: Hector McLauchlan.

Mr. Hesse said that, although the entries in the competitions were smaller than usual, the cah’es were of a A-ery high standard. He expressed the hope that all possible assistance would be giv-en to the movement. Mr. Wilton congratulated the competitors on the excellent standard of their entries and the winners on their success. He pointed out that the movement required funds, and its only source of income was from the mral community and those interested. Mr. Wilton thanked the judge, Mr. Knutson, the secretary, Mr. La Roche, and all others AA'ho had assisted Avith the competitions. Evelyn McGovern (Solway) who was awarded first prize for the best kept record book, interestingly reviewed the history of her calf, White Wings, from the date of its birth on August 13. She dealt with various aspects of its training, feed and brushing, its ailments and its groAvth. Everything was neatly tabulated in the book, A\ r hich also contained photographs of the calf on different parts of the farm. Specimens of grasses which the calf ate were mounted, while there were sketches of White Wings’s bucket, brush, halter, and diagrams of the feding bails and the paddocks. The whole book was a most interesting and accurate record of the progress and growth of the calf. Joyce Percy (Fernridge), who was also aAvarded a prize, presented an informative record of the growth of her Jersey calf Beauty, which Avas born on September 10. Reference Avas made to the feed given to the calf and to the recovery it made, after being dosed with linseed oil, from an ailment. From the day-to-day record, an insight could be gained of the amount of work entailed in brushing and training the calf. Grasses found in the padock where the animal grazed Avere -neatly mounted and a photograph of Beauty’s mother was attached to a coloured drawing of a paddock. There were also sketches of the calf, its shed, a bucket and a bag of meat meal.
