MASTERTON COUNTY

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The chairman, Mr. W. I. Armstrong, presided at the monthly meeting of the Masterton County Council, held yesterday. Others present were: Councillors H. H. Mawley, Gordon Lee, P. R. Welch, J. W. Colquhoun and J. Donald. The Chief Electrical Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote stating that the Minister of Public Works was anxious to have a detailed survey made of the whole position relating to electric supply service in rural areas, and asking if the council would co-oper-ate by giving the information asked for. It was decided to supply the information desired.

The Secretary, New Zealand Standards Institute, forwarded a copy of the proceedings and the opening address of the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research at a conference of local authority representatives and interested Government Departments, held on September 9, regarding the standardisation of local body by-laws. It was decided to hold the matter over until the next meeting of the council, Councillors Mawley observing that it seemed to be a step in the right direction.

“I think that the Board of Trustees are going to ask for an annual contribution from all local bodies to maintain the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum,” stated Mr. Armstrong when referring to a letter from the chairman of the Board of Trustees inviting the council to send representatives to a conference to be held in Wellington on December 16. It was decided that as many councillors as possible attend the conference. The ranger reported having dealt with 12 head of cattle and 3 horses during October and 5 head of cattle during November. The fees collected for the two months amounted to £1 10s.

Several resolutions were passed regarding the Masterton County Workers’ Dwelling Loan of £1,500
