STOCK MARKET

SPRING CATTLE FAIR. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., report on their last Spring Cattle Fair held at the Masterton yards yesterday as follows: A full yarding of all classes of cattle came forward and attracted a good attendance. Outside buyers were present from Feilding, Palmerston North and Wanganui. We again yarded some very attractive lines of grown bullocks, and for any of these in forward condition the demand was good, but for bullocks in store condition prices declined considerably. The demand in the yearling and female sections was also easier, but vendors in all classes realised the easing and met the market. We made a total clearance under the hammer. The top price for the day for bullocks was obtained by a forward P.A. line offered on account of Mr. E. C. White, “Manaia’’ at £lO/4/-; while another attractive pen offered on account of Lagoon Hills Station made £9/2/-. The following list of our principal sales will indicate values. Fat P.A. heifers, £7/5/-; fat P.A. and Hereford cows, £7, £7/2/6 to £7/5/-; light fat cows, £6, £6/15/- to £6/10/-; fat cows, exdairy, £5, £5/7/-, £5/10/-, £5/14/- to £5 15/-; light do., £4/5/-, £4/10/- to £4 14/-; forward P.A. bullocks, £lO/4/-; P.A. bullocks, £B/15/-, £S/17/-, £9 to £9/2/-; 3 and 4-year Hereford bullocks, £B, £B/2/- to £B/5/-; 3 and 4-year Shorthorn bullocks, £B/11/-, £B/14/- to £B/18/-; yearling medium P.A. steers, £5; small yearling P.A. steers, £4; small yearling P.A. heifers, £3 to £3 10/-; store cows, £3/10/-, £3/15/-, £4 to £4/1/-; low condition cows, with calves at foot, £5/9/-; low conditioned dairy cows with calves at foot £3/1,5/-; potter P.A. bulls, £5/17/6, £6/5/-, £6 10/- to £7.

The N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report as follows on the final of the Spring Cattle Fair held on Wednesday last at the Masterton yards There was a fair attendance of outside buyers but in all classes prices were easier, especially in the fat section. The prolonged dry spell and lack of cattle feed everywhere was a contributing factor. We had several attractive drafts forwarded from Glencrieff, Mamaku, Rewanui, C. Oliver, A. Ross, Waikoukou, and others. The following are some of our sales:—Fat steers, £lO/5/-; fat cows, £6/2/- to £7; fat heifers, £6 to £7; 2-yr. P.A. steers, £6/15/- to £7; yearling P.A. steers, £4/7/- to £5/16/-; Red Poll, £4/7/6; 3-yr. P.A. heifers, £5/2/to £5/17/-; 2-yr. P.A. heifers, £3 to £5 2/6; P.A. cows and calves, £6/5/-.

The New Zealand Loan & Mercantile Agency Company Ltd. report: Our entry consisted of 603 head of cattle, which were submitted to only a fair attendance, but this included buyers from outside districts who obtained a fair share of the yarding. Among our yarding we had the annual draft of yearlings from Messrs McGregor Bros, which, however, did not quite have the same condition as in the last few years. However, the steers were keenly competed for and made £5/17/- to £6. The sale on the whole must be considered fairly satisfactory wben the weather conditions are taken into consideration. In comparison with the cattle fair three weeks ago, most classes of cattle showed a drop from 10s to 20s per head. Although we passed a few pens at auction we were successful in disposing of most of these by private treaty. The following were our realisations:— , Fat Cattle: Fat bullocks, £lO to £lO 2/6; heavy fat cows, £8 to £B/5/-; light fat heifers, £6/10/- to £7/5/-; fat cows, £5/10/- to £7; runners, £3/10/- to £3/15/-; vealers, £2/5/- to £2/15/-; fat Jersey cows, £4 £4/10/- to £5. Store cattle: Bullocks, a/c. J. A. McLean, £9/10/-. Others, £8 to £9; two-year steers, £6/15/- to £7/5/-; yearling steers, a/c. A. McGregor, £6 to £4/14/-; a/c. M. D. McGregor, £6 and £5/17/-; small yearling steers, a/c. H. T: Hume, £4/16/-; a/c. J. H. Cameron, £4/10/-; store cows, a/c. Laird Meredith, £4/18/-. Others, £4, £4/5/to £4/10/-; 2-year P.A. heifers, £3/18/-, £4/5/-, £5 to £5/6/-; small yearling P.A. heifers, £2/5/- to'£3/5/-.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson & Co., Ltd., report: AVe held our fourth Spring cattle fair in the Masterton yards yesterday, when we offered a full yarding to a fair attendance. A big entry of grown bfillocks came forward, but the enquiry was limited, and we consider prices for this class of cattle back 25/- to 35/- per head. An exception to this falling off in price was the Brammerton 3-yr. bullocks, which were a first-class line in good condition, which made £9/18/-. Other lines sold at prices stated below. Younger steers were below last sale prices, but yearling held better than the 2-yr. cattle. Heifero met with a weak demand and prices were below expectations. Pats also met with a dull sale. Details: —3-yr. P.A. bullocks, to £9/18/-; ylg. P.A. steers, £5/5/- to £5/16/-; ylg. P.A. steers (small), £4 to £4/10/-; ylg. Hereford steers, £4/17/- to £5/15/-; small steers, £2/4/- to £3/5/-; ylg.
