ST MATTHEW'S CHURCH

SPLENDID SERMON. There was a very large congregation in St. Matthew 7 ’s Church last evening w 7 hen a splendid sermon was preached by the Bishop of Wellington, the Rt. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland. The service w r as conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. E. J. Rich, and the choir was in fine voice. The Bishop took as his text “Be ye Doers of t.lrn Word and not Hearers only.” Referring to the experiences of the War-years, the Bishop said that life then meant "a lot to everyone, in all walks of life,.. They were doing something and performing some service or other in a time of national crisis. He drew, attention to the dangers facing civilisation, particularly from moral looseness, and said that the whole tendency of life to-day, as a result of scientific development, was to have things done for us—to be just spectators or listeners. There was a sense of frustration and we were not fulfilling our destiny. There was a definite call for action, said the Bishop, who urged that the problems of the day should be faced. It was not sufficient merely to regard them and say how dreadful they were, but we should go further and say what are we going to do about them. The Bishop will be entertained by the Ladies’ Guild in the Parish Hall at 2.45 p.m. to-day and this evening at 5.45 o’clock he Will be the. guest of the men of the parish at tea in the Pans Hall. _____
