ABUSE OF SUSTENANCE

ACCUSED FINED. WANGANUI, Monday. Leonard Isitt Whiteside, aged 60, admitted to-day making three false declarations of his earnings for the purpose of obtaining sustenance. In one instance he earned £5 14s lid privately and received £1 12s sustenance.

The Magistrate, Mr J. H. Salmon, said he had discovered that there ay as a good deal of abuse of sustenance. He considered the only proper way to deal with offenders was to make it unprofitable to make false declarations. On each charge the defendant was fined £2 and costs 10s. —(P.A.)
