The Labour Conference at Edinburgh carried a resolution deploring yesterday’s events in the East End, and condemning the Government for not banning the Fascist march, and demanding the prohibition of political uniforms and militarised polities. The conference supported non-inter-vention in Spain by a huge majority. MEETINGS GUARDED BY POLICE. LONDON, Monday. Both the Communists and the Fascists held meetings in the East End tonight, which were strongly guarded by police. The arrests during the day totalled 84, for obstruction and assault. Scotland Yard states that, largely owing to the fact that it was one of the finest days of the year, many people assembled, including women and child-* ren, when disorder Broke nut, and the Fascist procession was banned to prevent further breaches of the peace. A Communist Party statement says: “Mass action of the working people exposed the pro-Fascist attitude of the Home Office, and the police, who sought to the last moment to enable Sir Oswald Mosley to march, are responsible for the baton charges and arrests. ’ ’

PRESS COMMENT.

HOOLIGANISM MUST BE ENDED,

(Received Tuesday, 12.15 p.m.) LONDON, Monday.

“The Times,’* in a leading article, referring to the disorder arising out of. the Fascist demonstration, says that this sort of hooliganism must clearly be ended. The! activities of both Fascists and Communists in this country seem to most people to be tedious and rather a pitiable burlesque. The police should decide on every occasion whether a procession or meeting was likely to provoke a breach of the peace and decide accordingly, and whether it should be held or not. To most people there did not seem much to choose between the Fascists or Communists as dangerous to public order. —(British Wireless.) FASCIST MEETING CANCELLED. (Received Tuesday, 12.40 p.m.) LONDON, Monday. Following upon communication with the police, a Fascist meeting at Bow, in East London, was cancelled a few minutes before the start. Fascists marched to another meeting at Bethnal Green.
