EMPIRE TRADE.

The British Empire Commerce Congress which is being held in Wellington draws attention to the vital necessity of the Empire trading within itself, just as it is necessary that Masterton should do likewise in order that the town should make progress. Unless the several parts of the British Empire support- each other in trade, there cannot be achieved that strength which is essential to the well-being of the Empire as a whole. The people of New Zealand should first of all buy from the firms which are established within the Dominion, and then with those of other parts of the Empire, only going to foreign nations for what they cannot buy within the Commonwealth of the British nations. By purchasing from foreign nations we are helping to build up those nations and providing them with funds which they could use against us if we later were engaged in war with them. World events show more than ever that the people of the British Empire must stand firmly together in the matter of trade; if we feed other nations we are providing ammunition which one day may destroy us. In a similar manner, Masterton cannot stand firmly upon its own resources and make the progress it is entitled to, if the people trade with . business firms beyond its boundaries.
