WAIRARAPA CLUB. SUCCESSFUL MEETING. Outstanding success was achieved by the Wairarapa Coursing Club with its final meeting of the season, held at Akura on Saturday in beautifuly fine weather. There was a large attendance of the public and some excellent sport was witnessed. The two events, the Open Stake for the Physick Challenge Cup and the Maiden Stake for the Kerslake Trophy attracted firstclass fields, dogs entering from Wailii,, Waitara, Napier, Hastings, Bayview, Dannevirke, Eketaliuna, Masterton and Carterton.

Both events were very keenly contested, the dogs putting up some fine performances. The final of the main event, the Open Stake, was fought out between Welcome News, owned by Mr A. Kininmont, of Hastings, and Why Hurry, owned by Mr E. J. Wing, of Masterton. In the first course of the final the judge, Mr S. D. Geary, could not separate the dogs,, the points being 6 all. In the second course Welcome News prevailed by 12J points to 9J after an exciting contest. The Maiden Stake was also won by an outside dog, Fleet Foot, owned by Mr A. Beatty ot Dannevirke. Fleet Foot defeated Black Micawber, owned by Mr B. Allen, of Carterton, in the final. FleetFoot showed a great- improvement in form and deserved to win.

At the conclusion of the meeting the president, Mr J. Bradbury,, presented the trophies to the vanning owners and congratulated them on their success. Mr Bradbury made a presentation of a chiming clock to Mrs M. Buiek and a pocket wallet to Mr W. Buiek in appreciation of the splendid support they had accorded the club. Mrs L. M. Archer, wife of the secretary of the club, was also presented with a silver hot water jug in recognition of the valuable work she had done in the interests of the club. Owing to Sir Buiek not being available, the duties of slipper were capably carried out by Sir F. Butcher. The club experimented with twelve hares purchased from the Christchurch Coursing Club. The hares, which had been used at the Waterloo

Cup meeting, were tried out during the first half of the programme on Saturday but they failed to come up to expectations and during the second half local hares were used with far greater success. There were only two kills during the last 16 courses with local hares. In view of the failure of the South Island hares the club has decided to establish trapping paddocks in order to secure an adequate supply of hares. The main paddock will be on Mr E. L. Raynor’s property, West Taratalii. The events decided on Saturday resulted as follow: — Open Stake, Phvsick Challenge Cup: —First round: Mr 11.
