HOCKEY

RAUKAWA SHIELD.

HONOURS TO WAIRARAPA.

The Maori hockey girls have brought home the beautifully carved Raukawa Shield.

With the majority of Te Ore Ore players, the team entered and played as Te Ore Ore. So after the experience of two previous tournaments, the Brown and Gold came out on top.

The team was: —Goal, Mrs Ilalberg (To Ore Ore); full-backs, Mrs R. Edwards (Gladstone), vice-captain, C. Palmer (Te’Ore Ore); halves, H. Thompson (Te Ore Ore), I. Namana (Gladstone), R. Ngatuere (Gladstone), F. Ngatuere (Te Ore Ore); forwards, K. Te Tau, captain (Te Ore Ore), E. Isaacs (Gladstone), P. Iwikau (Rangitikei), T. Haeata (Te Ore Ore), G. Enoka (Te Ore Ore), N. Greenland (Te Ore Ore). Friday saw the finish of the hockey tournament held under the auspices of the Raukawa Hockey Federation.

Playing four strenuous games on Friday, Te Ore Ore drew with Ohau with 11 points, although Te Ore Ore had beaten Ohau 1 goal to »il. The grounds were partly under water and heavy with mud, much to Te Ore Ore’s disadvantage, after being used to the hard and even grounds at Lansdowne.

On their play throughout the tournament, the Wairarapa girls stood the best chance of being the winners. The grounds, told on them on Friday, but they held their own, and with no goals scored against them, and their draw in points with Ohau, was most popular. The team played well, and their combination, head, and clever stick work was always applauded from the grandstand.

In the evening, at the Victory Ball, the two teams, Te Ore Ore and Ohau, lined up, and Mrs K. E. Te Tau, captain of the Te Ore Ore team, was presented by Mr L. G. Lowry (M.P. for Otaki) with the Raukawa Shield. Miss Winiata, captain of the Ohau team, was presented with silver buttons. Mrs K. Te Tau thanked the Raukawa Federation for extending them the invitation to play in the tournament, and voiced for the team theii great pleasure in having been given the Shield to hold until next year, and called on Te Ore Ore to give cheers for the Ohau team and the Raukawa Federation.'

Miss Winiata thanked Te Ore Ore, and called on her team for three cheers for Te Ore Ore.

In losing the James Hunter Cup, one may sympathise with the same team, who played after a little rest as Wairarapa v. Wellington for the cup. The previous strenuous games and heavy grounds soon told on the players. Wairarapa were to have played this match, on the following day (Saturday, 12th September), but when asked to play, the weather being unsettled, as tired as they were, they sportingly went on and played a full-time game, and lost the Cup by 1 goal to nil. The. Wairarapa Women’s Hockey Association may well feel proud that there is in Wairarapa a team, oven if all Maoris, who can provide honour for all hockey enthusiasts by bringing home such a beautiful Shield. The Shield will be displayed in Masterton in the near future.
