REDMOND CUP. OLD BOYS v. GREYTOWN. The comparatively small attendance at the Memorial Park on Saturday saw Greytown defeat Old Boys by 6 points (two tries) to a penalty goal kicked by Lang. It was a game of lost opportunities as far as Old Boys were concerned, as they had much the better of play territorially, and missed try after try through wretched handling, hanging on to the ball, or bad passing. Neither side was fully represented by their strongest team, and play was of a very poor standard. Mr F. Dean was referee. RED STAR v. CARTERTON. At Carterton the Red Star team outclassed Carterton, overwhelming the Reds to the tune of 24 points to 11. For Red Star, Johnson (2, one converted by Grantham), Peterson, M. Howard (converted by Grantham), E. Cross (converted by Grantham), and Barnett scored tries, and Trass scored a try and Hatton kicked two field goals for Carterton. Mr H. J. McKenzie was referee. DALEFIELD v. GLADSTONE. At Gladstone, Dalefield brought off a surprise by defeating Gladstone by 10 points to 6. ' MARTINBOROUGII v. FEATHERSTON. Featherston forfeited to Martinborough on Saturday. THIRD GRADE. Masterton 11, High School 11. Old Boys 24, Carterton 11. Red Star beat Featherston by default.

NORTH DEFEAT SOUTH. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday. With marked superiority, both forward and back, the North Island defeated the South Island by 17 points to 6 at Lancaster Park this afternoon. For the first half of the game there was little play that held out hopes of a good All Black side, but after the interval, with their forwards packing better, the North Island rearguard saw plenty of the, ball and brought off some movements that raised the crowd to its feet and shot wide holes in the Southerners’ defence. Though they battled manful ly the. South Island forwards had not the weight or dash of their opponents, and could get little of the ball. In the second spell the North Island backs revealed speed and initiative well worthy of New Zealand traditions. Pollock, the North Island full-back, was the outstanding player on the field. As well as playing an immaculate defensive game, he on many occasions ran up to set his three-quarters moving. On one never-to-be-forgotten occasion he raced up on the blind side of a serum, was past the Southern backs before they knew what was happening, and left Gilbert standing to score a magnificent try. Griffiths and Killeen were too fast for their opposite numbers, and Sullivan, the North Island centre, showed himself to be a dashing and speedy player. Reid, Smith, Dalton and Jackson were the pick of the North Island forwards. In the Southern pack, King, Millikcn and Quaid were always to the fore, while Hattcrsley did a lot of work in the tight. Rankin played a fine roving game and tackled like a demon. Gaffaney was always sound at first fiveeighth. Gillies and Mann were never allowed to get far, while Hart and Black, the wingers, had few opportunities on attack. Gilbert did a lot of good work, but lie was very slow, and twice was caught flat-footed by tke Northern backs. The game was played under perfect conditions on a fast field, and more than 15,000 people watched.— (P.A.)

AUCKLAND BEAT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Saturday. Playing fast and clever Rugby, Auckland beat Wellington on Saturday by 21 points to 18. Until the second spell the visitors had it all their own way, but in the last twenty minutes of play Wellington made a brilliant recovery. D. Solomon opened Auckland’s account with an unconverted try, and then E. Solomon picked up the ball from a loose melee and crashed through the opposition to score. Bush converted. Auckland again scored when Brown followed the ball across between the posts and beat the defenders racing to touch down. It was an easy kick for Bush to convert. Showing considerable kicking skill, Bush sent over a penalty kick from well outside the twenty-five. Culminating a strong offensive, Hansen went over from a loose scrum and scored near the posts. The half-time score was: Auckland 16, Wellington 3. Auckland were penalised for late tackling, and Lamason sent over a fine kick. Byerley (Auckland) ran from half-way past Crisp, and gave an opportunity for Anderson to score. Bush converted. Tin dill made a good run for Wellington, and a minute later potted a leftfoot goal. The home team again scored when, following a scrum near the line, Baldwin got across. , The Wellington forwards pressed hard, and presently Hansen slipped through to score. The second Rugby League test match between England and New Zealand, played at Carlaw Park to-day, resulted in a win for England by 23 points to 11. England showed allround superiority, but the home team, as a combination, was extremely disappointing. England were always dangerous, while New Zealand only looked like scoring on a few occasions, lack of finish to their movements being responsible. England scored five tries, three of which were converted by Risman, who also kicked a penalty goal. Cootes scored a try for New Zealand, which Watene converted.
