THE DAIRY FARMER.

Dairy companies in the Wairarapa have in most cases discussed the Government proposals in regard to the industry, and while, perhaps, not fully subscribing to them, seem to be prepared to give the legislation a fair trial before adversely criticising. While we do not see eye-to-eye with much of the Government legislation, and must condemn the party in power for not having carried out some of its definite election promises—such as the abolition of the sales tax—doubtless the Government is in earnest in legislating in _ the direction in which it considers would be of most benefit to the dairy farmer. It may not be handling many matters in a statesmanlike manner, but it is certainly trying to do its job according to its own lights. Whether it will succeed in satisfying the great majority of the people of the Dominion sufficiently to warrant the retention of confidence, remains to be seen. If the present legislation will assist the dairy farmer, who has had a hard row to hoe over a long period of years, then, whether the method adopted is socialistic or not, it must be conceded to be a step in the right direction. The small man on the land must be assisted, because the general prosperity of the Dominion depends so much on the dairy industry. The large farmer is more securely entrenched, and, therefore, betfer able to fight against adverse circumstances.
