HARRIER ACTIVITIES

MASTERTON DEFEATS NAPIER. SUTIIERWOOD TROPHY RACE. Under ideal racing conditions the Masterton Harrier Club defeated the Napier Club by 20 points in a six-man teams’ contest in the first race for the Sutlierwood Trophy which was presented this season by Mr Sutlierwood, who* is a keen supporter of the Napier Club. Mr Buekton despatched the field to a good start from opposite the main Park gates and R. Shaw (M) was the early leader. He was soon displaced by D. Talbot (M) with A. Lord (N), C. Talbot (M), W. Didcott (N) and A. Hughes (N) handy. On crossing Colombo Road bridge C. Talbot (M) lead by a few yards from D. Talbot and Hack (M). Pour Napier men —Lord, Didcott, Bromley and Hughes —were running closely together in the next position, the remainder of the field still being fairly well bunched. The pace remained fast throughout the-first .lap and on reaching the Park C. Talbot (M) held a 100 yards lead on Lord (N) who had displaced D. Talbot (M) from second position. Hack was lying fourth a few yards ahead of Didcott (N), then after 30 yards Hughes (N) and Mulvey (M) were . racing on terms about yards ahead of Shaw (M) with Kempton (M) following j'Closely. The Warren Bros. (M) were next with Bromley (N) and Hatch (N) in next position. Over the final lap the pace caused a few changes in the leading positions and on crossing Colombo Road for the second time C. Talbot still held a commanding lead over Lord (N). D. Talbot and Didcott (N) were fighting out a great duel for the next place with Mulvey about 30 yards behind. Hack and Kempton (M) had both lost a lot of ground over this lap. Talbot maintained his pace to the finish and ran home an easy winner by a 34secs. margin from Lord (N) with D. Talbot (M) in third position. Then came Didcott (N), Mulvey (M) and Hughes (N). With each club with three men home in the first six there was a possibility of a close finish in the teams event but the Masterton tail wagged more effectively and by keeping Napier’s sixth man back to 16th position enabled the club to win its first inter-club race this season and also the honour of being the first winner of the Sutlierwood Trophy.
