HEAVY FALL OF SNOW

EXPERIENCED IN SOUTH ISLAND. TIMARU, Friday. Timaru to-night is experiencing the heaviest fall of snow for some years'. The weather was bitterly cold all day and late in the afternoon snow commenced to fall. Later in the evening the fall was fairly heavy, the streets being covered. In some places the fall was over an inch. At Plasant Point three inches fell, while at Waihaorunga Valley the fall was in the vicinity of a foot. — (P.A.) FOUR INCHES AT ASHBURTON. ASHBURTON, This Day. The culmination of a week’s wet and cold weather, with three inches of rain, was a fall of four inches of snow in the borough last night. To-day the weather is bright and fine. There was no damage or loss throughout the country districts, where the fall was not quite so heavy. — (P.A.) HAIL AND SLEET. FALLS IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, This Day. Southerly squalls, with sharp falls of hail and sleet, have been sweeping Wellington all night, and continue this morning. All sports are off, with the exception of the two main features, the Wellington v. Hawke’s Bay Rugby match and the Soccer exhibition match by mixed teams of Australian and Wellington players. —(P.A.) CONDITIONS AT PAHIATUA. PAHIATUA, This Day. Snow has made its appearance at a very low point on the Tararuas in the past few days. This morning the barometer fell rapidly, and the first day of spring was heralded by a severe snowstorm in Pahiatua and the district. " Club football was postponed. The Eketahuna-Dannevirke Bush junior representative game was abandoned, owing to the impossible conditions.

The weather showed improvement later this morning, but it is feared that farmers will suffer heavy losses of early lambs, which are fairly numerous (P.A.)

Reports from Dunedin and Oamaru also record heavy falls of snow.

In Masterton early this morning and again about 7.30 o’clock there were falls of snow. Later in tho morning further falls of snow occurred. . A visitor to Masterton to-day said that the snow in some districts between Masterton and Eketahuna was a foot deep. It would appear that the fall was heavier in the northern areas than in the Masterton district.
