It is announced that Mr D. E. Fouhy has been appointed Official Secretary to the Governor-General in succession to Sir Cecil Day, who has recently taken up duty in the office of the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London.

Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., had a sudden heart attack ing at the Midland Hotel,, Wellington, where he is staying, and was taken immediately to the Bowen Street Hospital. Last evening his condition had greatly improved.

The friends of Mrs Mary Ellen Horsley, wife of Mr Pereival Jjfchn Horsley, will regret to learn of heflueath, which occurred at the Wellington Hospital this morning. The deceased resided inMasterton for a time. The funeral will leave the Salvation Army Hall, Jefferson Street, Brooklyn, Wellington, on Monday, after the service, which will commence at 2 p.m. The deceased is survived by her husband and one son and one daughter. The engagement has been announced of Lady Prudence Katherine Patton Jellicoe, youngest daughter of the late Admiral of the Fleet Earl Jellicoe and Countess Jellicoe, of St. Lawrence Hall, Isle of Wight, and 65 Cadogan Place, London. The bridegroom-elect is Mr Francis Hope-Loudon, only son of Mr and Mrs James Hope-Loudon, of Olantigli, Wye, Kent. Lady Prudence, who is very attractive, will be 23 in August, while Mr Loudon, who is a London barrister, is in his 29th year. He was called to the Bar in 1932.

The death took place in a private hospital at Hastings Thursday morning, after an over three months, of Te Whaiti, a Native well-known in Greytown and throughout the Wairarapa, The late Mr Te Whaiti, who was '52 years of age, was born at Pirinoa, being the eldest son of the late Mr Iraia Te Whaiti and Mrs Waikara Te Whaiti, of Greytown. He leaves a widow and a large family. Mr GeoTe Whaiti, of Greytown, is a brother. The remains are being brought to Papawai, where a big tangi is to be held.

Mr and Mrs W. Linton were . farewelled at Dyerville this week by a representative gathering of settlers, when several presentations, were made. On behalf of the Dyerville School Committee, Mr C. Garrity presented Mr and Mrs Linton with a silver fruit dish, Mr Campbell Smith,, president of the Dyerville Tennis Club, handed the guests a stand of fireirons, and Miss Linton received a Church praise and Master Linton a book from the Sunday teachers' and scholars. Mr J. McGillicudy, chairman of the Elmdale Dairy Co., presented with a handsome china as a mark of appreciation from the directors and suppliers. Mr and Mrs Linton and family are taking up their residence at Dalefield'.

To honour Mr W. Brown, for 37 years a member and for 23 years chairman, the Mangatainoka School Committee held a social gathering in the library hall. Dancing and social items made a merry evening. Mr A. Barrell, of Pahiatua, and formerly a well-known figure in Mangatainoka, made a presentation to Mr Brown of a large armchair, beautifully upholstered. Joy Sorensen presented Mrs Brown with a bouquet and Mr Barrell handed her a solid leather handbag. Messrs G. W. Chatwiu, ,E. L. Harvey, W. A. Bond and N. Power spoke of the fine work of Mr and Mrs Brown in Mangatainoka. The family, who comprise Mr W. T. Brown, of Pahiatua, Mr C. 11. Brown, of Ruawliata, and Mrs D. J. Fyfe, of Wellington and Mrs T. J. Tiller were the guests of Mr and Brown, Mangatainoka, for the gather- ♦
