SECONDARY EDUCATION

WAIRARAPA BOARD. The chairman, Mr L. J. Taylor, presided at the monthly meeting of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board, held last night. Others present were: Messrs P. M. Smith, A. T. Jackson, A. Donald, E. J. Wright, W. A. Clarke, W. 11. Jackson and Mrs C. C. Jackson. The Principal of the Wairarapa High School (Mr 11. B. Tomlinson) reported: Roll number, boys, 168; girls, 123; total, 291; average attendance, 93.3 per cent. Three new boarders were admitted at the beginning of the winter term, making the total 22. The inspector’s report was satisfactory both as regarded staff and organisation. The Principal said he anticipated that some difficulty might be experienced in obtaining an expert for physical instruction for girls and he suggested that some combination with the Technical School might enable sufficient inducement to be offered to obtain an expert from elsewhere if one were nOt available in Masterton. On 31st July a Eugby match would be played at Masterton with the Napier Boys’ High School and on the same date hockey and basketball matches would be played against the Dannevirlte High School at Dannovirke. Arrangements were being made for an annual football tournament between Wairarapa, Dannevirlte, Hutt and Scots College. The tourney would be played on Saturday and Monday following the close of the second term.

The Education Committee was instructed to submit a report to the next meeting regarding the securing of an expert physical instructress for the girls at the High School. The advisability of introducing into the school course subjects on aviation, electricity and radio engineering and electrical engineering formed the subject of a comprehensive report submitted by the Principal of the Technical School. It was decided to thank and congratulate Mr Yates on his report and to defer consideration of it in the meantime. The following were appoint d visiting members for the month: Messrs E. J. Wright and W.-A. Clarke. It was decided to obtain six copies of the Atmore Education report for the use of board members. The Principal of the Technical School and Mr Donald were appointed to represent the board at the Technical Education conference to be held i:i Wellington in September.
