BADMINTON

HIGH STANDARD SET. Badminton of a very high standard was seen at the Palmerston North Opera House on Saturday, might, when , representative teams from the Master-' toil and Manawatu Central clubs met. Although some of the games, were won by comfortable margins of points, practically every game was 1 very keenly contested and long, interesting rallies were frequent. P. Hawksworth, the Masterton champion, proved himself far’ and away above any other player present, but W. Jensen (Manawatu), R. Orr, J. Payton and Dr. O’Connor (Masterton) all came to light with some excellent badminton. Although outclassed by Hawksworth in the singles, R. Duncalf (Manawatu) by no means disgraced himself, while R. Hill and E. Douds, two other Manawatu players, gave splendid exhibitions. Among the women, Miss T. Rodde and Miss B. Rodden (Manawatu) were too clever for the visitors, the former displaying an extremely brilliant backhand that very seldom let her down. Her usual strong point,' drop shots at the net, failed badly, but nevertheless she gave a fine exhibition, and partnered by her sister, who played very steady and clever badminton, defeated the visiting top pair, Misses Lois Hosking and A. Beetkam, comfortably. Miss Hosking l is of the hard-hitting type, and brought off some beautiful smashes. Miss N. Payton, a novice, showed good promise, and Miss Pam Betts also played well for the visitors. Miss May Hancock (Manawatu) was a little over-anxious, but brought off many pretty ppint-winning drop shots at the net. Miss C. Neagle and Miss B. Burrell both played particularly well for the home team, each reaching a standard higher than previously this season.

Although Masterton won 13 sets to the home team’s’ 11, Manawatu Central came out the winners on points by a, margin of 13, their tally being 283 against the visitors’ 270. —* 4 Manawatu Daily Times.” BED STAR SPORTS CLUE.
