THE SALES TAX.
In the course of an interview this week, the Prime Minister (the lit. lion. M. J. Savage) stated that the sales tax was to be removed as soon as possible, and he has emphasised the fact that that undertaking was one of the Labour Party’s election planks. Mr Savage admits that the imposition of the sales tax was wrong, just as the raising of the exchange was wrong, but maintains that it _,is impossible to rectify the position by a stroke of the pen. The business community of New Zealand look to the Government to carry out its pledges, and surely there has been time to lift the sales tax ? This scandalous piece of legislation has imposed a hardship on tradespeople and helped to increase the cost of living. If the Government can carry out legislative measures, as has been done in the first few weeks, of its control of the finances of the Dominion, it could have abolished the sales tax months ago.
