FIXTURES. 21st, 23rd May.—South Canterbury. 23rd May.—Carterton. 23rd, 25th May.—Waikato. 30th May.—Foxton. 30th May, 3rd, 6th June.—Auckland; 6th June. —Ashburton. TURF NOTES. The hurdler Scotch Nation was heavily supported'for the President’s Handicap at Hamilton on Saturday, and he made a great attempt to .win, all the way, only to fail narrowly. Scotch Nation was a couple of lengths clear of the field in the middle stages, and was still in command at the straight entrance from Velocipede. Delrain and Mungatoon. Below the distance Velocipede gained a slight advantage and in a sustained struggle he defeated Scotch Nation by three-parts of a length. Korero finished on strongly to get third and Delraim was fourth, with Horowhenua, Mungatoon and .Con Fuoco-' next.. Scotch Nation’s-effort w,ad excellent for a jumper, and he is likely to retain his position as favourite for the Great Northern Hurdles. Con Fuoco, Horowlienua and One Whetu. * .shaped very, creditably, though-they were unplaced, and may do better at Ellerslie. In spite of Queen of Song carrying a hurdle horseman and- some overweight on top of her big impost in the Ellougliton Handicap at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, she was sent out first choice, but although" responsible for a good race she did not threaten much danger in the run home. Moneyless was the early leader, but at the end of three' furlongs Trivet had' charge from Metal Bird, Cranford, Moneyless, Daring Deed, and Epris, with Queen of Song, Mount Val, and Polydora bringing up the rear. Queen of Song made a -fast forward move rounding the top, and was close up to the leaders turning for homer "Trivet was first into the straight from Metal Bird, Cranford. Daring Deed, Moneyless, Queen of Song, and Epris, but the final struggle had not long been in progress before Epris had the leaders beaten, and drawing away won comfortably by two lengths from Metal Bird, who outstayed Trivet, to .beat her by a length. Golden Dart, Argentic, and Cranford were in a bunch a length away with Moneyless next. Epris ioutclassed the leaders in the run home, and is evidently getting back to the form which enabled: him to win the last Winter Cup.
