TIMBER WORKERS
, NEW AWARD APPLIED FOR. COMPULSORY UNIONISM CLAUSE. WELLINGTON, This Day. An application for a new timber workers’ award for the South Auckland, Taranaki and Wellington districts, was heard in the Arbitration Court to-day as the outcome 1 of an k agreement at the conciliation proceedI ings at Palmerston North on 6th May. ■ Mr Read, for the North Island Timber Workers’ Federation, brought under the court’s notice the matter of compulsory unionism. He said that he had been in touch with the Minister, who had told him that the amended Arbitration Act would be in operation almost immediately. - Mr Read informed the court that he understood the compulsory unionism clause would come into force in i a month after the passing of the Act. He wished that clause to be embodied in the new award. Mr Seed, representing the employers, said that those engaged in the conciliation proceedings appeared to wish to leave the drafting of the, preference clause entirely to the court, so that the clause would be in compliance with the new legislation. Judge Page said that the court would take time to consider that point when the legislation went through, and would draw up the clause in accordance with the legislation/ —(P.A.)
