COLLISION AT SEA
NIAGARA DAMAGED. VICTORIA (British Columbia), Wednesday. The liner Niagara, AA'liich left Victoria at 5 p.m. Avith the Australian Premier, Mr J. A. Lyons, aboard, collided Avith the freighter, King Egbert, AA r hen 40 miles off Victoria. Both ships are returning to Victoria under their OAvn poAver for survey. The boAvs of both ships were damaged in the collision, Avhich occurred iu the Straits of Juan do Euca, 23 miles Avest of the Race Rocks. It is understood that the collision occurred in a fog.
The Niagara, anchored late to-night in the Royal Roads, Esquimault. She m/iy enter dry dock in the morning. Officials of the Canadian Australian Line at Vancouver stated that the Niagara Avas only slightly damaged. She Avill probably proceed again to-morroAV. EXTENT OF DAMAGE. (Received FridaA', 9.5 a.m.) VICTORIA, Thursday. ShoAving less damage than Avas feared, the Niagara Avas tied up at the pier Avith forty feet of railing of the port boAv of C deck and ton feet of the superstructure of B deck shorn aAvay; also three plates Avere buckled aboA-e the AA r aterline. The Australian Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) said that the passengers took the collision philosophically, after the first bit of excitement. No one Avas injured. The crash occurred at 8.10 p.m.,. as many of the passengers Avere sitting down to motion pictures. The pictures Avere resumed an hour later, and a dance took place aa'Mlo the liner made back to port through the fog. It is believed that the sailing will be delavcd a Aveck.
