FOOTBALL

ASSOCIATION CODE. (NOTES BY “FREE KICK.”) The Carterton senior team will again appear at the Park on Saturday next, when it will play Albion. This should be an interesting and even game. In the first game of the season the result was a draw.

United and Masterton will meet at York Street, where the Albion Intermediates and Rangers will play the early game.

The early game at the Park should be one full of interest. Whatman Old Boy now lead in the Intermediate division, but Masterton is an improving side and may upset their prospects.

It will be of interest to know that we now have a referee holding the New Zealand Referees’ Badge. Mr N. Heyes was successful in the recent examination, and will be the first of the Wairarapa referees to wear the badge.

In order to gain more co-operation between the Association and senior clubs, the management committee of the former is inviting delegates from the senior teams to a meeting to be held next week. A fruitful discussion on present and future activities is expected. #

Finance will be needed to carry out the projected programme. To assist in this, and to add to the social activities of the code, the Association is holding a dance in the Masonic Hall on Saturday next, 20th July. All supporters of the code should assist by attending, thus showing their interest, and helping in the management of the' game. & * * * *

With further representative games in view, it is expected that the senior selector will arrange a trial game in the near future. This would provide an interesting interlude prior to the commencement of the knock-out competition, and is also necessary if all players are to bo given a. fair chance to qualify for representative honours. * * * *

West A were able to withstand a challenge for the H. B. Thomas Shield by the narrow margin of one goal. Poor direction in shooting saved both goal-keepers from being over-worked. * * * *

St. Patrick’s have a strong attacker in B. Roche at outside left, while West’s defence by 11. Corlett and J. O’Brien saved many dangerous situations.

There are good prospects for the selection of a strong team to play at the North Island tournament, which commences on 3rd September at Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. * * * *

The selector hopes to narrow down the range of likely players in a second trial game on 27th July. The names of players to take part in this game will bo announced early next week. RUGBY TEAMS. The Old Boys’ seniors to play Martinborough to-morrow will be: —MeCalmont, Martelli, Roach, van Prangh, Poison, Lang, Stroud, 11. Laing, McCalmont, Wilson, Falls, G. Laing, Daniell, Baxter, McLeod, Wainscott, Hilton, Morris.
