FIRE BOARD

ANNUAL MEETING. The chairman, Mr Trevor Beetham, presided at the annual meeting of the Mastcrton Fire Board. Others present were:—Messrs W. A. Parton, J. Quinn, W. Kemp and W. Candy. Mr Beetham was re-elected chairman for the ensuing year. In his report for the quarter, the Superintendent (Mr T. B. Clark) stated that the Brigade received 25 calls to fire. The value of the property on which the fires occurred was estimated at £IO3O, and the value of the contents was estimated at £1450. Insurance on the buildings amounted to £Bl 10s 6d, and on the contents £26 17s 4d. The total fire loss for the quarter was £l3l 19s lOd. Splendid results were obtained as a result of the activities of the brigade during Fire Prevention Week. For the year ended 31st March the brigade received a total of 54 calls. The estimated value of the property on which the fires occurred was £40,021 18s, and the insurance on the property £25,324 14s Od. The total fire loss for the year was £1221 9s 4d. Observing that it was necessary to extend the street fire alarm system in the most congested areas of the town, the Superintendent suggested that, if possible the board should make provision on the estimates for sLx new boxes and transmitters complete, to be installed during the coming year. It Avas decided to leave the matter in -abeyance until next year. It Avas resolved that the members of the Brigade be given one day off in every six, and to grant them tAventyone days’ annual leave. The men are to be paid a retaining fee of £5 per annum.

A proposal to purchase a ucav fire engine Avas held over until next year. It Avas decided to fonvard a letter to the Borough Council, expressing appreciation of the manner in Avliich the Borough Inspector (Mr T. A. Russell) co-operated AA'ith the Superintendent during Fire Prevention Week. The chairman expressed thanks to tho secretary (Mr D. B. Curry), the Superintnedent, members of the board and the brigade, for their Avorlc and cooperation during the year.
