FOOTBALL

(By “Blue and Gold”)

Frank Lockwood, ex-Masterton senior and Red Stay cricketer, writes interestingly from Auckland: —“This letter will probably be a surprise. I am enclosing a printed copy of notes on the playing of Rugby used by all clubs up here. They were .compiled by our coach, Ray Galbraith (Tech. Old Boys), and Yin Meredith, of Grammar Old Boys. You will find that they are very interesting and contain a lot of useful hints to any player, back or forward. I am playing in the A section this season for Tech. Old- Boys. Up here we have a lecture every Tuesday on tactics before training and then go into the gym. and go through what we have just discussed, an,d’ to say the least I have leaimed a lot already. Thursday night we have physical jerks only, and believe me, they are wonderfully beneficial. Our forwards are a bit light and I was intended for a lock position but I am now set for the front row. We played Grammar Old Boys (Yin Meredith’s team) last Saturday for a practice game. After a shocking beginning in which we were down 17 to nil we got all over them in the last bit and won 19/17. By the way I kicked 3 goals, which is more than I could do down there. I was marking big Bubs Knight, and believe me ho is hard. Corner also plays for them too, but we have a real hot stuff back line. Our half-back, Bob Aro, is going to be a real corker, and' we have other Auckland reps, in the backs in Murdock, Turbath, and Haslam. All the same games are going to be real hard .to win. Grafton, Mamakau, Ponsonby, Otaliuhu, all have good teams, to say nothing of Varsity and Maris t. Swin Hadley and Frank Solomon are turning out again and there should be some real good football here this year. Things are pretty tough up here, work being scarce, but I have been lucky so far. Best wishes for a successful season to Wairarapa and all the boys. ’ ’ . OLD BOYS’ TEAMS. The Old Boys’ teams for Easter Monday (all games at Memorial Park), are as follow: — Seniors v.
