RUBBISH SERVICE
INSPECTOR’S SUGGESTION.
In his annual report to the Masterton Borough Council last night, the borough inspector (-Mr T. A. Russell) stated: —• The collection and disposal of refuse is proceeding in a satisfactory manner. The bins are better maintained than formerly. Extra rubbish, was removed from 171 premises. This extra rubbish will soon bo down to a minimum, as the benzine tin is-now little in evidence and the rubbish consists of old iron spouting and material of a like nature. The question now arises as to whether we should not advance a step further, and pick up the rubbish from the back door instead of from the street. Of course, as this would entail extra cost, it is a matter for the Council, but I would respectfully advance the following points in favour of back door col-
lection:— (1) The rubbish bin at its best is unsightly, and not in keeping with our rapidly improving streets. (2) The bin is out of the reach of dogs, who sometimes have an uncanny knack of removing bin lids and distributing the contents on the footpath. (3) The collection is carried out without inconvenience to the ratepayer, and bins would not be missed through the occupier forgetting to put them out, and thus causing undesirable conditions until the next rubbish day. (4) It would obviate dislocation of service at holiday time through ratepayers failing to see advertisement, do away with rush days, find even in normal times the collection would be steadier. (5) It would provide useful work for several men, and advance the town sanitation.
