A RESIDENT MAGISTRATE.
The protest made by.the Masterton Chamber of Commerce at its meeting yesterday relative to the non-residence in Masterton of a magistrate was justified on the conclusive statement placed before the Chamber in connection therewith by Mr H. H. Daniell, who stressed the desirability of the magistrate being available at convenient times for the handling of legal matters beyond those coming within the scope of ordinary sittings of the court. The Justice Department is not warranted in slighting and causing inconvenience to the people of the AVairarapa who have business with the courts over which the magistrate presides. As was pointed out at the Chamber of Commerce meeting, the business of the courts in the AVairarapa has been facilitated through the magistrate residing in Masterton, and the Department has no right to bring about a condition of things which would cause more expense and inconvenience to litigants and others. . Wc trust that the deputation which is to wait upon the Minister will be successful in its mission; it certainly has strong arguments to support it.
