RIVERSIDE CLUB. lAIPROVEAIENTS TO LINKS/ There was an attendance of about thirty members at the official opening of the Riverside Golf Club’s season, which took place on Saturday in wet weather. In declaring the links officially open for the season, the president, Air W. J. Rew, referred to the unavoidable absence, on account of illness, of the patron, Air D. J. Cameron. Briefly surveying the remarkable progress made by the club since its inception, Mr Row said that at the outset they had used as a pavilion a small shed, kindly made available by Mr J. Barr. As finances had permitted, a club house had been built, while now, due to the efforts of tho past-president, Air W. Batty, and the energetic committee, it had been found possible to have the pavilion further extended and improved. Air Rew also reform! to the enlarging of the links from nine to eighteen holes. The links were in first-class order, and the members should enjoy a most successful season. An enjoyable mixed foursome was played, and afternoon tea was provided by the ladies. MAHUNGA CLUB. Despite the weather conditions, there was a very good attendance of members for the opening day of the Alahunga Golf Club on Saturday. The lion, secretary, Mr J. G. AlcFarlane, before calling on the club’s president, Air G. 11. Perry, to declare the links open, extended a welcome to the visitors and new members. An apology was made for tlie unavoidable absence of the club’s patron, Air T. Jordan. Air AlcFarlane also expressed the club’s appreciation to Mr H. Rayncr for the excellent work he had carried out in the short time available, in preparing the ground for play, and called upon the members to co-operate with tho committee in making the club’s venture a successful one. . Air Perry, who was accompanied by Mrs Perry; was enthusiastically received and offered congratulations to club members for the enterprise shown in extending their links and m acquiring a new property. He stated that, in tho early stages, lie was doubtful as to the advisability of the club making a move to new country, but that after going over the links he felt sure that a brighter future was before members. Besides being picturesque, the course was handy to town, and the country was easy, though play would be interesting and difficult enough for most golfers. The facilities were available for watering both greens and fairways, and m time he saw no reason why the links could not be developed into one of the finest golf courses in the Wellington district, with summer golf one of the main attractions. He had much pleasure in declaring the links open for play and wished the members a successful and enjoyable season.
