OBITUARY

MR. A. S. GRAN*.

The death occurred yesterday afternoon at the residence of his son, Mangamahoe, of Mr Adam Sutherland Grant, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr Grant, who / was well known throughout the Wairarapa, where he had resided all his life, suffered only a slxoit illness. Born at Martinborougli, Mr Grant later resided at Bannockburn, Gladstone, a property owned by his father, the late Mr Robert Grant, who came to New Zealand from Sutlierlandsliire, Scotland, in 1852 and took up his residence in the Wairarapa.

Mr Adam Grant was a member of a committee which in 1885 promoted a memorable Highland gathering at his father’s station, Bannockburn. The gathering was said to be the first of its kind in the then colony of New Zealand and established in this district the tradition since carried on by the Wairarapa Caledonian Society. The late Mr Alexander Grant, who established Burnside station, Takapau, in 1860, was a brother of Mr Robert Grant. The late Mr Adam Grant was for several years manager of Mr J. Strang’s property, Glenside, Gladstone, and was associated with farming pursuits and stock buying in many parts of the district. He was of a retiring disposition and was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. His wife predeceased him thirty years ago. He is survived by a family of three sons and five daughters—Messrs Robert (Australia), John (Carterton) and Malcolm Grant (Mangamalioe) and Mesdames F. Beaufort (Pahiatua), W. J. Campbell, R. Coutts and Misses J. and I. Grant (Masterton), There are also seven brothers and one sister (Mrs A. F. Stevenson, Woodrville). The sympathy of a wide circle of friends will be extended to the bereaved relatives in their loss.

The funeral will take place to-mor-row, leaving the residence of Mr W. J. Campbell, College Street, Masterton, at 3.30 p.m. for the Clarevillo Cemetery.
