DO YOU KNOW? Q. —Where is New Zealand’s largest and most modern tobacco factory situated? A. —At Petone, Wellington. Q. —What famous tobaccos are manufactured there? A. —Blue Shield (Medium) and Red Shield (Dark). Q. —Where does the New Zealand tobacco used in them come from? A.—The Nelson Province. After it has been cured it is sent to Wellington. Q. —What do you mean by curing? A. —The leaf when picked is a green vegetable product. Curing means drawing from the plant the surplus moisture —at the same time leaving the leaf in perfect condition until required for manufacture. Q. —How is it cured? A. —The leaf for the Dominion Tobacco Company is flue cured —in large kilns in which the heat is regulated for the required period in the ideal manner. Q. —Is it a more satisfactory method than air curing? A. —Certainly—because you cannot rely on the sun and air to produce from day to day the necessary degree of heat and dryness. Q. —Then curing is a very important stage? A. —Yes—because mistakes made then can never be rectified. All the leaf for Blue Shield and Red Shield has be'en flue cured. 66
