POWER BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. (Special 'Reporter.) At the commencement of business at the Wairarapa Electric Power Board’s meeting yesterday the engineer’s report was dealt witli immediately to enable Mr Keenan to get away to Ivourarau, word having been received that the belt on the main governor on a turbine had broken, this allowing overspeeding of the machine and the burn out of underbearings. Power Board trading and the votes of interested board members was the subject of a short discussion and it- was decided to obtain a definite ruling on the right of Mr Grace to vote on these matters, as he is in the electrical business himself.

In speaking of Miss Gardner’s resignation from the staff of the Masterton Office Mr Brown made reference to the splendid service given by Miss Gardner over a period of 5A years. On the proposal of Mr Howard Booth it was decided to give Miss Gardner a month’s salary as leave on pay.

Mr Dalgleish then suggested that Miss Gardner’s successor be a male, and also if possible none other than men be employed. The socretary-man-ager replied that it was always the policy of the board to employ a man if possible, and in the reorganisation of staff found necessary in the Masterton office owing to increase of work in general, it would be necessary to add a boy to the present staff. Accounts amounting to £2123/18/7 (December) and £5416/16/10 (January) were passed for payment. Notice of motion had been given by Mr Dalgleish to rescind a resolution passed at a meeting of the Board on 18th October, 1934: ‘‘That a bonus of £ls be voted to an employee,” Mr Dalgleish moving that in place the resolution be, “That a gift be voted.” Mr Hugo remarked that enough had already been said on the matter. 1 Mr Dalgleish was the only one in favour of the a npendment. 'The question of direct telephone service between Masterton and Carterton offices, also sub-station at Waingawa, was brought forward by the secretarymanager. There are two methods by which this could be provided for, namely (1) for the board to erect a line on its own power poles; (2) to get the Carterton office connected direct into the Masterton exchange. The P. and T. Department has been asked to advise definitely what the cost of the second method would be and the matter will be definitely decided at the next board meeting. The fact that Masterton consumers will be able to dial through direct to the Carterton office will be.of very great advantage. This has been mooted for a number of years and it is hoped that satisfactory arrangements can be made with the P. and T. Department.

A letter was read from a consumer conveying his appreciation of the way in which certain wiring and alterations to outside service connection had been carried out by' the board’s staff.

The Farmers’ Union wrote expressing appreciation of the reduced cost of poAver to dairy farmers and hoped that a further reduction will be possible next year.

Tenders are to be called for the.proposed alterations to Masterton office and showroom, also for painting, etc., of the cottages at the Knoll at Kourarau.
