The Mayor told representatives of the foreign press that, besides £IOO,OOO already offered for foreign athletes’ travelling expenses, Tokio would spend £1,500,000 ofi grounds and ample facilities if selected for the 1940 Olympic Games. Moreover the Diet would make a big appropriation. It was thought that Japan deserved selection, due to her sports achievements, while the Olympic Games had not vet been held in Asia. Furthci, 1940 will coincide with the celebration of the 2600th anniversary of the founding of the Japanese Empire.
