OBITUARY

MR CHARLES GOULTER. The death occurred on Monday, at Hawkesbury, Blenheim, of Mr Charles Francis Joseph Goulter, in his 81st year. The late Mr Goulter was born on 11th April, 1854, at Stafford Place, Nelson. His father was Mr Cyrus Goulter, and his mother was Anne, sister of the late Archbishop Redwood.

Mr Cyrus Goulter, who was the leader of the party which made the initial survey of the Marlborough _ district, saw great grazing possibilities in the Blenheim territory, as a result of which he acquired the “Hawkesbury’’ block of 9000 acres. Mr C. F. J. Goulter was educated at an establishment in Nelson conducted by the late Father Garrin. From his earliest years he showed a strong aptitudee for pedigree stock breeding. At the age of 14 he returned home from school and by. the time he was eighteen on four occasions he had been sent by his father through Jolly’s Pass to Canterbury to purchase purebred Merino ewes for Hawkesbury. In those days this was arduous work, as there were no roads and very few fences. In his early twenties Charles Goulter was sent to South Australia and Tasmania, where he acquired purebred Merino rams and ewes —the rams from the late John Murray, Mt. Crawford, and the ewes from T. Gibson, Bellevue. This stock formed the foundation of the famous “Hawkesbury,” “Murray,” and “Tasmanian” Merino strains. In 1877 Mr Goulter married Catherine Louise, second daughter of Captain Carey-Brown, of the Royal Engineers, who was at one time stationed on Jersey Island, and who ultimately settled at Karori, Wellington. Mrs Goulter and the following members of the family survive him:—Messrs C. P. Goulter, of Seddon; H. O. Goulter, of “Sevenoaks,” Blenheim; E. R. Goulter, of Fairlic;-and S. J. Goulter, of Wellington : Mrs G. H. Munro, of Seddon; Mrs J. W. Colley, of “Old Hawkesbury,” Blenheim; Mrs E. Sibeth, of Taunton, England; Sister Goulter, of Manchester, England; Sister Christopher, of St. Mary’s, Wellington; Mother Goulter, of Timaru; and Miss M. Goulter, of Hawkesbury.
