Mr E. Jenkins, of Masterton, has been appointed judge of the events at the N.Z. Fire Brigades Demonstration at Blenheim next week. The death has occurred at Dunedin, at the age of 85 years, of Dr; Daniel Colqulioun, one of the early professors of Otago Medical School.

Sergeant-Major E. Bezar, of Wellington, late of the 57th (“Dieliards”) Regiment, yesterday celebrated his 97th birthday. He received numerous congratulatory telegrams throughout the day, including a personal message from his Excellency the Governor-General. Yesterday afternoon the president, Mr A. O. Jones, and several members of the Masterton Bonding Club called on Mr and Mrs A. Welch to convey to them their heartiest congratulations and best wishes in connection with their golden wedding. Mrs Welch was presented with a bouquet. The death occurred in the Greytown Hospital on Saturday after a brief illness, of Mr Harry Thompson. The deceased, who was 76 years of age, was a quiet, unobtrusive man, who followed the occupation of a chimney sweep. Before going to Greytown he had resided in Masterton for many years.

A pretty wedding took place at St. Peter’s Church, Pahiatua, yesterday, when Miss Sylvia Taylor, third daughter of Mr and Mrs Godfrey Taylor, Pahiatua, was married to Mr Francis Henry Bryant, eldest son of Mr and Mrs F. V. Bryant, Ruawhata, Pahiatua. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. F. E. Fleury, of Martinborough. At Nelson the death has occurred of Mr Edward Thomas Menlove, aged 63 years. Tho deceased was born in Dunedin and was engaged in sheep farming in Marlborough for many years, then retiring to Nelson. The deceased’s father was Mr Edward Menlove, of Windsor Park, Oamaru. Mr Menlove interested himself in work for returned soldiers, and his participation in sport included golf, bowling, and croquet. He leaves a widow. Mrs A. P. Burnes, of Nelson, and Mrs A. C. Wilson, of Christchurch, are sisters, and an elder brother, Mr William Menlove, lives in Southland.

The Hon. F.,H. Tout, M.L.C., a member of the Principal Board in Sydney of the A.M.P. Society, accompanied by his son and Mr A. W. Sneddon, general manager of the Society, arrived at Wellington yesterday from Sydney. Accompanied by Sir Harold Beauchamp (chairman of the New Zealand Board of the Society), Sir William Hunt (deputy-chairman), and Mr W. T. Ikin, manager for New Zealand, they left for Hawke’s Bay, via the Wairarapa, during the afternoon to be present at the opening of the Society’s new building at Napier to-day. A short stay was made at tho Masterton district office, where they were entertained at afternoon tea by the district manager, Mr H. J. Brass and staff.

“On behalf of tho members of the board, I wish you success, health and happiness,” said Mr L. J. Taylor, chairman of the Wairarapa Secondary Education Board at last night’s meeting of tho board, wishing Mrs T. R. Barrer, a member of the board, au rcvoir and bon voyage on her approaching visit to England. Mrs Barrer sails on Friday next. Acknowledging the wishes, Mrs Barrer said she did not know at present whether she would be resigning as a member of the board or asking for extended leave of absence. Several members said it would bo regretted if Mrs Barrer found it necessary to resign and an assurance was given that there would be no difficulty in arranging extended leave of absence.
