DEATH SENTENCES IMPOSED

India’s most sensational trial ended -with death sentences on Benoyendra I’adncy and Dr. Taranath Bliatta'charya, who were convicted of conspiring to murder Amarendra Pandey, stepjbrother of Benoyendra, by the injection lof deadly germs. Dr. Dhar and Dr. Sivapada Bhattacharya, who were similarly charged, were acquitted. Amarendra Pandey was a wealthy 'owner of property -which his stepjbrotlier Would inherit. Tui'e prosecutor alleged that the murder was plotted with diabolical ingenuity. Benoyenidra Pandey, aided by doctor friends, Successfully attempted to kill Amaxempa by smearing tetanus germs inside his spectacles. The prosecutor alleged that Taranath Bhattacharya, aided by Sivapada, then obtained plague bacilli from the hospital at Bombay. The germs were injected by a pin-prick while Amarendra was going home in a crowd. Amarendra died, and Sivapada allegedly issued a ..certificate permitting cremation. The Crown suggested that the germs were first tried out on rats and guineapigs.
