HARRIERS

KIATERE CLUB. As last Saturday’s junior race was the first inter-club contest of its kind ever held in New Zealand, a few notes on it might be of interest. The distance, 2-1 miles, should not be beyond the powers of any healthy boy, and as a senior from each club ran with them to help them and see that they did not strain themselves, there was no fear of any harm being done them. All the boys gave of their best, and a very interesting race resulted. * * * *

A. McDonald, though outpaced by two older opponents, stuck to them gamely and proved his right to the championship.

J. Laing has missed three or four Saturdays, but still ran a good solid race as usual.

B. Patrick struck a bad patch early in the race, but responded pluckily to a little encouragement, and ran well over the later stages, beating his man home. * * * L. Francis ran a very good race, teaming exceptionally well. * * * * G. Turnbull ran easily his best race so far. He hung on splendidly to Francis'and Patrick, these three giving the best exhibition of real teaming seen in the Wairarapa for a long time. * * * * T. Scott was suffering from lack of training, but came on very well in the last mile or so, beating a boy who had gained a good break on him. D. Va.uglian, though well back, stuck gamely to it. As long as he does that he will improve all right. * * * * C. Stuart also ran well, but was not allowed to race too hard. Ho attracted a good deal of interest from the visitors. * # * * Of the visitors, E. Bichardson and D. Sunderland were older and more experienced than any of the local boys, and both gave a very good exhibition. * * * * J. Bczer ran a good race, beating. Francis by 3 seconds. * * * . * J. Wilson has not been running regularly, and rather faded in the later stages. * * * * P. Bush was unfortunate to twist his ankle. After having it bandaged he finished the course, pluckily refusing a lift lest he be disqualified and his team fail to finish as a team —an example of the real harrier spirit we might all well copy. f * * * All the boys thoroughly enjoyed their week-end and parted the best of friends with their hosts. It is hoped to arrange annual home-and-liome races between the two clubs, which should do much to boost the colts sections.
