SCOUT BIRTHDAY

ST. MATTHEW’S GROUP,

The eleventh birthday of the St. Matthew’s Scout Troop, which was established on 31st August, 1923, was observed in the Den on Saturday night. All sections of the group participated —the Wolf Cub packs, the Boy Scout Troop and the Rover crew. Work and games were indulged in from 3 p.m. to 5.30, these being followed by tea and a sing song. In the evening e parents and others were entertained by the Scouts and Cubs. The proceedings included investiture ceremonies, presentation of badges, troop and pack work and a shadowgraph by the RoveTAt a suitable interval a magnificent three-tier birthday cake, kindly donated by Mrs Gawith, Senr., was cut by Assistant-Rover Leader J. C. Robinson, the oldest member of the group and a Scoutmaster of the original troop. The visitors included District Scoutmaster Halpin and a party of Featherston boys, representatives ot the Carterton Troop and District Cub Master, Miss E. Dillon. Thanks were due to Mrs Gawith for again donating the birthday cake and to the Ladies Committee for assistance with the tea arrangements. Cubs. —A. Butcher and R. Budd were invested as Wolf Cubs. Tenderpad badges were presented to Cubs M. Taylor and J. Franklin; first stars to 0. Mclvor, D. Cook, D. Brown and R. McGovern; a sixer stripe to C. Lyttle; second stripes to J. Irvine and K. Rue, and a first-year service star to Assist-ant-Cubmaster S. Frater. Scouts. —Lewis O ’Hara, Aubrey Wainscott and Noel Flaws were invested as tenderfoots. Second Class Badges were presented to Euan Martin, Lyell Ferguson and David Perrin; ambulance badges to F. Lambert, C. Thomas, J. Aikman, K. Osborne, L. Rippon, T. Gray, A. Crotncy and J. Thomas; cyclist badges to C. Thomas, K. Osborne and M. Eastliope; handyman’s badges to D. Ackerman, C. Thomas, J. Thomas and M. Easthope; a five-year service star to J. Thomas; a two-year service star to A. Cretney, J. Aiticen, and a one-year to M. Cole and D. Pollock.
