TERRIFIC EXPLOSION

AT RELIEF WORKS.SYDNEY, Friday. A terrific explosion, which the police believe was deliberately set off, occurred early this morning when a large quantity of gelignite and detonators exploded in the unemployed relief works depot in Bexley suburb. The depot was blown to pieces, sheets of iron and tools being hurled hundreds of yards. Windows of neighbouring houses were shattered, ceilings fell in and shop windows collapsed. Residents of the locality were terrified. Some people sleeping in their beds were shaken violently as if by an earthquake. Electric light -wires were severed by flying iron, plunging the district into darkness. The effect of the explosion was felt 14 miles away.
