CYCLIST’S DEATH

CORONER’S COMMENT. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. At the inquest concerning the death of Hubert John Suckling, aged 58, a well-known business man, who was killed while cycling in a collision with a truck driven by A. E. Keys on 16th June, the Coroner, Mr E. D. Mosley, returned a formal verdict that death was due to the injuries received. The Coroner also commented on the evidence as to the state of the brakes on the truck. “When Keys braked the truck,” he said, “it skidded for some distance, from twelve to seventeen feet, and then suddenly the brakes evidently failed to act. It seems an extraordinary position that for six years no such occurrence took place and that when an accident occurs it is attributed to this. It strains one’s jßiulity to believe that fact. it may be so. The police, in tests made, found that the brakes were inefficient. I don’t propose to say anything more than that.”—(P.A.)
