CRICKET

THE FOURTH TEST ENGLAND AT THE WICKETS. Press Association Electric Telegraph—Copyrigh* LONDON, Friday. The weather was fine and warm, with a light breeze. Twenty-five thousand people were present at the start. Wyatt won the toss, Woodfull losing for the third successive time. Sutcliffe’s inclusion was left in doubt till the last minute, the selectors deciding not to take a risk with his strained leg. The teams are: —• Australia. —Woodfull (captain), Ponsford, Bradman, Brown, McCabe, Darling, Chipperfield, Oldfield, Grimmett, O’Keilly, Wall, Bromley (twelfth man). England. —Wyatt (captain), Walters, Hammond, Hendren, Leyland, Ames, Verity, Hopwood, Mitchell, Keeton, Bowes, Nicholls (twelfth man). Walters and Keeton opened on a wicket which still contained a good deal of moisture due to overnight rain following earlier heavy falls. Wall and McCabe opened the bowling. Both batsmen played the former with confidence, Walters scoring three fours off his first two overs. McCabe was respected. The wicket looked easy. Grimmett and O’Reilly took over when half an hour had produced 30 runs. Twenty minutes later Keeton played late to a faster ball from O’Reilly, Oldfield taking a sharp catchon the off side. „ The score was raised to 50 in 65 minutes. The fielding was good despite. a rough ground. Bradman and. Darling were applauded for good work in the field. The batting remained uneventful until a quarter of an hour before lunch, when Chipperfield, who replaced Grimrnott, brought Walters forward to a floating ball. Walters was easily caught and bowled.' Hammond and Hendren continued a quiet and even morning’s play until the luncheon adjournment. ENGLAND’S SMALL SCORE. AUSTRALIA STARTS BADLY. (Received Saturday, 10.10 a.m.) LONDON, Friday. England compiled 200 runs in the first innings, and' at stumps Australia had 3 wickets down for 39. Wall bowled with only Chipperfield in the slips, thus emphasising the deterioration of his pace, but he throw all his energy into one ball, which swung in and bowled Hammond without addition to his score. In Chipperfield’s next over, apparently a ( ‘ wrong ’un ’ ’ beat and bowled Hendren. —Four for 135. Wyatt and Leyland were unable to get Chipperfield and O ’Reilly away, and the scoring became tedious, 150 taking 205 minutes. Both men brought off a couple of fours before a faster ball from O’Reilly slipped through Leyland’s defence. He was out leg-before. This was quickly followed by the dismissal of Wvatt, whom Grimmett coaxed out to a ball which dropped quickly, and he was easily stumped. - Only ten runs had been added attei tea when Ames stepped out to drive, and snicked the ball to Oldfield. Without addition to the score, Hopwood went out leg before. Oldfield missed a chance of stumping Verity, but he atoned for this by stumping Mitchell. England’s innings showed a deplorable lack of batsmanship, after a promising start. The pitch was nei ei difficult. Fifty minutes remained when i onsford and Brown opened. The batsmen were confident. When the total was 37, Bowes clean bowled Brown. .. . . . In Bowes ’ next over, Oldfield snicked one to Ames, who took an excellent catch. * „ Woodfull came in at 6._0 p.m. He missed the first ball and played the second on to his wicket. , Stumps will be drawn daily from 0 p.m. until 9 a.m. next week.
