CLIMBING MT EVEREST

FATAL ATTEMPT. CALCUTTA, Thursday. Mr Maurice Wilson, who slipped out of Darjeeling a few weeks ago to make a forbidden attempt to climb, Mt. Everest, lost his life near Camp- 4, at a height of 22,990 feet, established by last year’s expedition. He was accompanied by only three porters, one of whom was left behind with dysentery. The remaining two went w'ith him to Camp 3. Mr Wilson gave them instructions to wait for a fortnight, and pressed on alone, with a small tent, three loaves of bread, two tins of porridge, and a camera. The porters waited for a month and then returned to Darjeeling. It is believed that Mr Wilson perished either in a treacherous crevasse or in an avalanche.
