STAVISKY SCANDAL

The latest development of the StavIsky scandal is the arrest' of Guibourd Ribaud, formerly attached to the Ministry of Finance, on a charge of complicity in swindling and ‘ ‘ trafficking in influence. ’ ’ Ribaud admitted receiving £9OOO from Stavisky, which he paid to newspapers and to Volonte. The police allege that he was one of the distributors of Stavisky’s largesse. Accordingly, importance is attached to twenty-five cheque counterfoils seized in the house of a friend of Ribaud, who personally surrendered other documents. M. Sarraut declares that the identity of the person who handed over the counterfoils will not be revealed, adding that recent experience has shown that it might expose him to dangerous reprisals. The police are now in possesof Stavisky counterfoils showing ■(payments totalling 21 millions sterling. persons are named in the counterfoils. The ‘‘Sunday Express” says that the counterfoils were discovered owing to a

packet posted to persons in London bemisdirected. It was consequently reto the French postal authorities, on opening it, were amazed at the contents.
