A cable from Melbourne advises the death ,of Sir Nicholas Loekyer, first Commissioner of Taxation in , New South Wales, aged 78. The death occurred last evening of the Rev. George Lindsay, aged 87, a retired minister of the Presbyterian Church, reports a Press Association message from Christchurch. He was minister of St. Paul’s, Invercargill, for 23 years until 1911, in which year he was Moderator of the General Assembly. He was afterwards at St. Clair for two years and'at 'Southbridge for five, years. Many residents of Masterton will regret to hear of the death, which occurred at Morrinsville on Friday night, of Mr William Clement Cargil, for-;: merly. a well-known resident of Masterton. The late Mr Cargil was managing director of . the Cargill Publishing Company, which publishes the 1 ‘Morrinsville Star,” the *‘Matamata . Record,” and the "Putaruru Press.” Mr Cargill, who was in his 63rd year, was born in Kent, England, , and was educated at Newport and Dulwich College. He was an enthusiastic tennis player' and ericketer, and some years ago represented Wairarapa, Wanganui, x and South Taranaki in the cricket field. y' He was also a senior player for the V Red Star Football Club and acted "as secretary for some time. He also played for the Wairarapa junior representatives. He was proprietor of the "Wairarapa Star” from 1892 to 1902, and (with Mr A. C. Major), changed the name of the paper to the "Wairarapa Age.” Subsequently he became proprietor of the "Patea Press” and the "Pukekolie Times.” He purchased the "Morrinsvile Star” in 1915. Mr Cargill was formerly' a member of the Wanganui Education Board and the Taranaki Education Baord; and was president of the New Zealand Master Printers’ Federation from 192 S to 1930. The late Mr Cargill is survived * by his widow, a sister of Mr L. S. Nic.ol, of Masterton,. and two daughters.
