HEAVY FINES IMPOSED

RAID ON GAMING HOUSES.

WELLINGTON, Friday. In the Magistrate’s Court to-day, before Mr E. Page, S.M., Wing Lee, Wong Iling, Ah Sam, Ah Wong, and Len Cheng were charged with using premises situated at 136, 120, 103, 130 and 134 Taranaki Street respectively as common gaming houses. The accused pleaded guilty. Ah Sam and Ah Wong, who had previously been convicted, were each fined £3O, and Wing Lee, Wong Hing, and Len Cheng were all fined £25. Sub-Inspector Martin said that a constable had no difficulty in purchasing pakapoo tickets on the premises, which had been used for the purpose of playing pakapoo for some time. It was difficult to put a stop to the practice.

On charges of being found in a common gaming house without laivful excuse, 23 men were fined £3 and another £l.

Five houses in Taranaki Street were raided by the police.—(P.A.)
