BUILDING SUBSIDY

STIMULUS OF NEW SCHEME. MASTEETON APPLICATIONS. The Unemployment Board’s new sub-. sidy scheme is likely to give a muchneeded stimulus to the building trade in Masterton. Under the revised No. 10 scheme, which came into force on Ist June, applications received for the subsidy at the local Labour Bureau include jobs involving an estimated capital expenditure of £'5169 Bs, and an estimated labour cost of £1757 12s fid. The approximate ‘total amount of subsidy is £657 on the total capital cost. Five of the applications are for the building of dwellings, and include the erection of- a block of four Mats in Dixon Street at an estimated cost of £2OOO, and the largest job upon which the subsidy is caught. Four of the applications are ftor new houses, while another six are for comparatively small jobs, involving alterations, additions or repairs. The subsidy paid by the board from the Unemployment Fund on approved works ds at the rate of 33 1-3 per cent up to award rates on the total wages paid in respect of the labour actually performed on the premises, with the exception that on new dwelling houses not exceeding £650 total building cost, the wages subsidy is up to 50 per cent up to award rates on the total wages paid, in respect of labour performed on tlie premises. Clause 3 of the rules of the new No. 10 scheme states: —“Subsidy will not be payable if the work is commenced prior to the approval of the Unemployment Board being notified to the owner, and approval of the subsidy will be cancelled if the contract is not let and work actually commenced within three calendar months of the date of notification of approval, unless by arrangement with the Unemployment Board dn the case of large buildings, where the time necessary for the preparation of plans and specifications would exceed that period of time.”

BUILDING PERMITS. Six building permits, to a- value of £1467, were issued by the Masterton Borough Council during the month of June. In the corresponding month of last year, 9 permits were issued, to a total value of £2053 11s Bd. The major i'ty of the jobs for which application has been made for a subsidy under the new No. 10 scheme are not included in last month’s permits. However, permits will likely be applied for during the present month, which, with other jobs contemplated, may , send up the July values to a figure above that of any month in the past eighteen months. The value of four permits issued in July of last year amounted to. only £76, the lowest value for many years, so it is safe to forecast a substantial increase in the July total for this year. For the first quarter of’ the present financial year, the 21 permits issued by the Master.ton Borough Council are valued at £4120, compared with £3834 8s 8d -for 25 permits for the same period of last year, an increase of £285 11s 4d. The figures for the three mouths, with the figures for the corresponding months of last year in parentheses, are as follows: —April, 5 permits, £IBB (10, £1657 7s); May, 10 permits, £2465 (fi, £123 10s); June, 6 permits, £1467 M, £2053 11s 8d). ;: ■ ■ No building permits were issued by the Masterton County Council during .the month of June.
