WORKS PROGRAMME.

The Acting-Prime Minister (Right Hon. J. G. Coates) has announced a State programme of works which will absorb a number of those who at present come within the category of relief workers. The proposed Government undertakings include a new railway station at Wellington and a new post office at Dunedin. By many people, both these works will be classed as extravagances at the present time, but the Government seems bent upon spending money, and if some of it can be expended in a direction which will be of permanent use, then other taxpayers may forgive them. The taxpayei of the Dominion is so suspicious of the present Government and he has every reason to be so that he will keep- wondering whether a further levy is to be made upon him to provide what may be called additonal extravagances. The Government lias wasted thousands of pounds upon useless commissions and joy trips to various parts of the world —money which could have been far better utilised in finding useful work for men and women in New Zealand. The taxpayer and others have learned to their sorrow that the Government does not know what the word honour means, or that there is any sanctity in a contract, and certainly does not put any faith in the statements of whatever mouthpieec is put up by the ment to gull the people for the time being. There will be nervousness concerning the cost oi these new undertakings by the Government, and where the money is coming from right up till the time when the last nail is driven and the final coat of paint put on the buildings.
