FURTHER TROUBLE

W AT DEVIL’S ELBOW CAMP. ' MEN CEASE WORK. Further trouble has occurred at the Publie Works Department relief camp at the Devil’s Elbow deviation job, -six miles from Masterton. The men ceased work this morning owing to dissatisfaction oveir payments for the past fortnight’s work and also because of the deduction of a sixpence fine with the unemployment levy instalment due in May. The men state that they were not in a position to pay the levy last month in order to avoid the penalty as six weeks had elapsed before a payment was made. The engineer in charge, Mr Hansen, has been asked to meet the men at the camp and it is anticipated that he will arrive at Devil’s -Elbow some time today. At a stop-work meeting yesterday morning the men decided to cease work to-day and to ask Mr Hansen to m4ft them and heair their fresh grievarJffl Representatives of the men came lift? Masterton yesterday afternoon and ed the position before Mr 11. secretary of the Masterton Relief Workers’ Union. Mr Duley went out to the camp this morning to interview the men. After the demonstration a little over two weeks ago the men in the Devil’s Elbow Camp were invited to elect a committee but so far the suggested committee has not been formed. Mr Duley stated this morning,-, a number of the men had been paid 9/4 for two weeks’ work from which 5/6 had been deducted for quarterly levy and fine.
