DEVIL’S ELBOW CAMP.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —The 'letter in Monday night’s paper, stating that the Devil’s Elbow camp is a sea of mud, is not true. The ifcrouiblA at this camp is the wage, ;it hieing considered by the men employed there that the Public Works Department camp should b e xm a flat rate wage of 10/- a week,, the same as other { unemployment camps.—*l am, etc;/ 1 . belief worked.
(We have made ihfluiries and find that the Public Warns Department o system, of piece work benefits workers, some of whom earn 15/- a week/ The average wage earned finder • system is said to work out , at ut 11/-a week. —Ed. W-D.T.j (To the^.Edito-r), Sir, —I am the relief worker who was dismissed firom the job, after working a few hours. ' I see it stated in your •paper yesterday that I had been warned once or twice before I was dismissed. Well, that' is not . true; for, although he did is'peak to the. whole gang, the foreman never spoke to me personally. I ask you, Mr Editor, wliePber you think it is fair to, judge a person ;by a few hours work ? I think myself it takes more time than a few hours to get used to this’work. I did expect when going out to the camp that I would receive fairer treatment than what I got. I may istate that it is 'the first ■timiei I have been dismissed from any job and if it- is desired I will be quite 'willing to give you the. name and address of any employer I have worked under. Most probably I have been f y enough to work under men that give a worker a fair deal. Thankyou and hoping it is not taking up 100 much valuable space.—l am. etc., BELIEF WORKER.
