LIBERATION OF FRY
A NEW POLICY. A now policy for the distribution of fry in the North Wairarapa streams for the next three years is to be drafted by Mr J. Miller, curator of the Masterton Fish Hatcheries, and submitted to the next meeting of the North Wairarapa branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society. This decision was reached at a meeting of the society last night, and the scheme is to be based on the understanding that half of the available fry is to be liberated in the Ivopuaranga Stream. The question was raised by Mr F. C. Broekett, who .stated that in his opinion the bulk of the fry should be liberated in one stream, instead of being distributed throughout the various rivers in the district. Last year, 90,000 fry were liberated, and should the same number be available this year lie would suggest that 20,000 be put in the Kopuaranga and the rest in the Ruamahanga. This policy of concentration on one stream had proved very successful in tlie ease of the Ran'gitikei River. Concentration in the distribution of fry Avas the only way to obtain good results and good fishing, observed Mr .1. Miller. As a result of being heavily fished, the Kopuaranga Stream Avas going back, and unless it AA'as Avel 1 stocked up, it Avould go back still further. It Avas a good stream, Avith plenty of feed for the fish. Mr W. 11. Saunders said that the Waipoua River was carrying thousands of small size, but the difficulty Avas to get them of any size. He did not think it AA'ould be much good putting 40,000 or 50,000 fry in the Ivopuaranga. this year unless it was intended to perse\mre Avith the policy for at least three years. It Avas eventually decided to ask Mr Miller to draft a policy for the liberation of fry for the next three years, and submit it to the next meeting of the society.
