GOLF.
The game of golf increases in popularity each year, and bids fair to be as universally played in winter as tennis is in summer. There was a time when golf was a game for the leisured class, and any invasion by wliat may be termed the ‘‘lower orders,'’ was resented. No particular section of a community can expect to have a monopoly of golf; it is now a game for the masses—whether rich or poor. In a considerable measure it is drawing recruits from our national game, football. The rough methods which have of late years crept into football may have bad something to do with this, for there is no sense in a young fellow' risking limb, and perhaps life, in a game. In Masterton, golf has- “caught on” with all sections of the community, and it is no longer a game for the few. The followers of golf have increased to such an extent that clubs find it necessary to close their membership, or otherwise their links would he overcrowded to such an extent that play would he impossible. The approaching season promises to be the most successful ever recorded in the golf history of Masterton, while fn the near future the difficulty will be to find additional links for those who wish to take up the game.
